5 Healthy Habits During Remote Work

The year began with the celebration of ‘Global Family Day’ on January 1st—an initiative by the UN to promote multiculturalism, pluralism, and peaceful co-existence. In the wake of the pandemic's toll on our physical, mental, and psychological well-being, such initiatives are increasingly significant as we move forward.

As remote work becomes the new norm, the dynamic between office spaces and employees resembles that of a family working together. While working from home offers flexibility and adaptability, there are important considerations. The constant presence of smartphones, social media, and 24/7 connectivity can negatively impact our well-being. Ultimately, the goal remains a healthy work-life balance.

To foster well-being while working from home, here are five healthy habits to adopt:

  1. Take a Breath. Rest Your Eyes. Get Some Fresh Air.
While it may seem like common sense, it’s easy to overlook self-care in a remote setting—especially during periods of isolation. Remember to step away from your screen and take breaks. Fresh air and relaxation are essential for mental clarity and serotonin production.
  2. Prioritize Mental Health.
Working from home often disrupts schedules, as family obligations can arise unexpectedly. Managers can play a crucial role by being understanding and flexible, helping employees establish healthy boundaries and avoid burnout.
  3. Be Realistic.
Setting goals is important, but unrealistic expectations can lead to anxiety and decreased confidence. Remember to keep your targets SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound.
  4. Never Forget Breaks—Recharge.
The blurring of work and home life can lead to increased stress. The brain needs downtime, so taking regular breaks is crucial. Short, optimal breaks boost productivity and prevent burnout.
  5. Learn to Prioritize.
Juggling multiple tasks can be overwhelming. Try breaking tasks down into four categories: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and neither urgent nor important. This approach helps manage stress and enhances productivity.

By adopting these healthy habits, you can create a more balanced and fulfilling remote work experience. For more resources on health and safety, visit Core EHS.
