Animation: An Effective Training Tool

I still remember my college days when I developed a passion for reading books. I loved exploring novels by authors like Paulo Coelho, Chetan Bhagat, and many others. One of the novels that made a huge impact was Chetan Bhagat’s "Five Point Someone." Later, the renowned film director Rajkumar Hirani adapted the book into the blockbuster movie “3 Idiots.” The film became a huge success, and even those unfamiliar with Chetan Bhagat and his work were introduced to it.

From this experience, I concluded that if you want to capture people's attention, you need to tell a good story. Selecting the right audio-visual medium for storytelling yields great results, as it engages two important senses simultaneously: hearing and sight. Even the most serious speeches often include stories to keep the audience interested. Animated movies, being audio-visual in nature, are especially effective because they can be easily understood by everyone, including non-literate or domestic workforces.

Humans naturally relate to stories and characters from real life. Beyond entertainment, visually captivating scenes tend to stay in our memory longer and are easier to comprehend. This is why we can instantly recall famous movie dialogues, like “Kitne aadmi the?” from Sholay or “Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahin, namumkin hai” from Don.

This storytelling concept, when applied to training, can lead to better outcomes than traditional classroom lectures. If "true-to-life" scenarios are portrayed through animation and storytelling, training becomes more engaging and easier to understand. Additionally, critical information is retained for a longer time.

When we specifically consider EHS (Environment, Health & Safety), the subject matter can seem dry and boring, yet it is an essential part of any workplace. On a daily basis, incidents and accidents occur both on-site and off-site, making effective and proper training vital. While safety training often involves conveying serious information, compelling animated safety videos with engaging stories can make a more significant impact on the audience. Furthermore, animated safety movies can address multilingual needs, ensuring that workers from various nationalities and cultures can benefit.

Animated safety videos are ideal for generating excitement during training sessions, aligning the audience with your goals, and engaging them emotionally. Once their attention is captured, trainers can easily present the remaining critical details.

These animations can depict real-life situations workers face every day, and information can be consistently shared in each training session through animated videos. Additionally, animation is ideal for demonstrating complex processes that are difficult or impossible to observe in a practical setting. For instance, cross-sections of a complex machine can be showcased through animation, and incidents or accidents can be recreated to highlight key mistakes, thus helping prevent future occurrences. Technical training can also be enhanced using animated simulations.

Globally, the use of animation in training is becoming a significant trend, driving a major shift in how we approach learning and development.

Please share your thoughts on how animation can be utilized at your workplace.
